the craftsmen relied on merchants to obtain the raw materials they required for production and to find new and profitable overseas markets in which their finished products could be sold; in return merchants expected to be supplied with high-quality items at a price which allowed them to make a decent profit. These relationships not only helped to keep transaction costs low and profits high, they also enabled greater specialisation.
