Whilst according to Lucian (De Dea Syria, 6), Byblian women who refused to shave their hair and offer it to the god Adonis at the annual festival in his honour were punished by being forced to spend a day prostituting themselves in the temple of ‘Ashtart.

Phoenician temples (at least those consecrated to ‘Ashtart) employed guards, servants, barbers, scribes, musicians, butchers, bakers, a ‘water master’, a ‘sacrificer’ and sacred prostitutes.
